Goodbye Germs!

Today Ms. Brown's friend (and guest speaker) came into our classroom. She is a nurse that has to deal with germs everyday. It is very important for her to know how to properly wash her hands! She taught us a few tricks of the trade but also showed us an experiment where we were able to see germs on our hands under black light! 

Always use SOAP. Wash for at least 20 seconds (or sing Happy Birthday). Don't forget to wash the top of your hands and wrists. 

Spring Break is coming up and the last thing we want is to be sick!

Division 16

The Many Feelings of Division 16!

Congratulations Ms. V!

On the weekend, one of our wonderful teachers got married! We are more than thrilled for her and her new husband! 

Congratulations Ms. V. on becoming Mrs. Conlin!

Division 16

We stand up against bullying!!

Today we celebrated Pink Shirt Day (Anti-Bullying Day)! We discussed the importance of standing up for ourselves and friends if someone is picking on (or bullying) them. We read "Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullies" to get a better understanding of what a 'typical' bully looks like. As well, we learned how to deal with a bully. Here are a few things that we discussed:

Although we wore pink on ONE day of the year, we will continue to stand up against bullies, all year round!

Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Yesterday we celebrated Lunar New Year! We read a book called 'Goldy Luck and the Three Pandas', which has the same story line as 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' but teaches us about Chinese New Year traditions. We learned that the colour red and the number 7 are lucky in their culture. Also, red envelopes with money in them are given to the family members to promote good wealth. Instead of Goldilocks eating porridge (oats) she is eating Congee, which is a type of rice porridge. 

We made red banners with Chinese characters meaning 'longlife', 'peace', and 'good luck'. With that, we found a great opportunity to capture a class photo, dressed in red! 

Ms. M. and Ms. Brown were very luck to receive red envelopes. Thanks S! :)

During Math, Ms. Q. came in and taught us how to write characters in Cantanese, while one of our students stood up and demonstrated a couple of samples of Mandarin characters. 

We are lucky because our school is celebrating Lunar New Year on Monday as well! Stay tuned for a few more pictures of what we did!

Happy Valentine's Day!

This week we started our unit on Friendship. We are learning about what it means to be a friend and how we can deal with any friendship difficulties. 

To finish our week we celebrated Valentine's Day-- a day full of love for our family and friends. 

As Ms. Brown missed this celebration, she felt the love from her class miles away. (Thanks kiddos!) 

Family

This week's theme was FAMILY. We have discussed our 5 "W's" (Who, What, Where, When, Why) about Family. Each student brought in a picture of their family and told us all about their family traditions and things they like to do together. 

One of our favourite authors, Todd Parr, wrote a fantastic book called, 'The Family Book' that talks about how all families are unique. We made many connections to this book throughout our presentations. Some families are small, some are big, some have pets, some don't. 

Another great book that we read was "The Things I Love About Family" by Trace Moroney. This book has a couple pages of character traits and feelings you have towards your family. We had a great discussion about what it meant to "have belongingness". 

On Friday, our school celebrated Elders' Day! We had many grandparents, parents, aunts, and uncles roaming around our school hallways. We were so lucky to have so many visitors in our classroom and we heard some amazing stories of their lives growing up (some MUCH different than ours!). Thank-you Elders for coming in to visit and share your Show & Tell!
